Amanda Judd's dream of playing for Australia in the first ever Rugby World Cup Sevens women's competition has ended after she fractured her left fibula during a training session at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.

The 32-year-old has returned to Sydney to see an ankle specialist to determine whether she will require surgery, her place in the squad being taken by Tobie McGann, who steps up from the shadow squad.

“We were doing some drills and she [Judd] just got caught under a couple of players,” revealed coach Jason Stanton.

“Tobie is a part of the national squad, she has been in camp as a shadow, so she will now come into the World Cup team and Cassandra Bailey from Gladstone, Queensland will come in as a shadow.

“We’re just going to push on with it and keep preparing.”

Australia, the Oceania Sevens champions, are the second seeds for Rugby World Cup Sevens behind England and have the honour of kicking off the inaugural women's competition against China on 6 March.

They will also face Netherlands and France in Pool A on the same day.

Australia Women’s Sevens squad:
Cheryl Soon (Captain), Nicole Beck, Tricia Brown, Bo De la Cruz, Tobie McGann, Alexandra Hargreaves, Debby Hogkinson, Shelley Matchem, Tui Ormsby, Ruan Sims, Rebecca Tavo, Selena Tranter.
