Brazil to host South America Sevens
Brazil's women line up on home soil as continental champions and firm favourites

San Jose Dos Campos in Brazil will host the South American (CONSUR) Sevens championships for both men and women over the weekend.

In the men's draw a second string Argentine squad - all players still pushing for Rugby World Cup Sevens squad places - lines up against Chile, Brazil, Paraguay, Venezuela, Colombia and Peru and second seeds Uruguay, who will also compete at the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai.

The women's competition, however, is likely to provide the more competitive matches and gives Brazil a chance to hone their preparations on home soil ahead of the World Cup.

Brazil's women were the first team to qualify for the inaugural women's World Cup Sevens, and are unbeaten in South American competition for the past four years.

They face the combined challenge of Argentina, Venezuela, Uruguay, Colombia, Chile, Peru and Paraguay.

It is the Argentine women, however, who will be keenest to finally overcome the Brazilians, having lost out to them in World Cup qualifying.

“The team is in good shape and very confident," said Noelia Portillo. "I think we're going to do well, our defence is solid and we have a strong core of players, plus we've trained far more than in previous years."

"We travel to Brazil with high expectations," said team mate María Eugenia Botelli. "We will try and play like we know we can and be positive.

"Brazil are a tough team, we have to defend well against them and press them when they have the ball. We also need the ball more than we've had it against them in the past."
