BOWL FINAL

CHINA 10-7 BRAZIL

Coach Zheng Hongjun (CHN)

On what the success means for China:

“I think it is a very big success for China’s women’s team and it is very important because Rugby is not as popular as other sports such as table tennis and Olympic sports. I think Rugby can become big in our country. I think Rugby Sevens should be included in the Olympics because, for us in China especially, it would encourage people to play, especially youngsters.”

On how the team's success will benefit rugby in Asia:

“I think it will really help and put focus on the sport in the area.”

On the secret behind China’s success:

“I think our team is very good at passing and moving as they are all very young. I think parents will have seen this success and they might want their children to play rugby now and in one or two years time this country could become very good.”

Captain Beatriz Futuro (BRA)

On losing the Bowl final to China:

"I feel a little bit depressed. Actually I don't know, it was close for us but it was our first World Cup for everybody and we just tried our best. It is our first time and we are not used to this level of rugby. We are not accustomed with this fast rugby, but China were more to our level."

On whether this tournament has helped Rugby's campaign for Olympic re-inclusion:

"I think that if the intention of the Olympics is to unite the people I think the rugby is the better example of sport to show because every one who plays  rugby knows what this union represents. So I think rugby just needs to be in the Olympics because they represent all this."

BOWL SEMI FINALS

BRAZIL 17-12 RUSSIA

Coach Flavio Santos (BRA)

On potentially lifting the Bowl trophy:

"It feels amazing. I think it is just unexpected for us. It was a goal to achieve the final. Just to be here was a goal in itself, so we are going to go for it, but it is a sensational and amazing feeling."

Coach Pavel Baranovsky (RUS)

On what he has learned and what the tournament could do for Sevens' bid to become an Olympic sport:

"It is a very good competition. We have learned a lot and like it a lot. It is a very good positive for my country and women's rugby in Russia. Yes I want the Olympics."

BOWL QUARTER FINALS

RUSSIA 12-5 NETHERLANDS

Coach Pavel Baranovsky (RUS)

On defeating the Netherlands to reach the Bowl semi final:

“We played a very strong game and it is very good for me and my team to get through to the Bowl semi final.”

On facing Brazil in the Bowl semi final:

“They are a good team but we are going well and we will see. In Russia we only have 100 girls who play rugby because it is not a professional sport there. It is very good and very positive for Russian rugby and we are happy about that.”

BRAZIL 12-7 UGANDA

Emily Barker (BRA)

On making it through to the Bowl semi final:

“It’s what we wanted as we didn’t want to only play one game today.”

On Brazil's women being involved in the first World Cup Sevens:

“There are a lot of women players back home watching and I think that this is a big start to Brazilian rugby. Hopefully we will now have a different sport for people to play in our country apart from football and maybe now rugby can fly in Brazil.”

ITALY 17-0 THAILAND

Maria Diletta Veronese (ITA)

On beating Thailand to make it to the semi finals of the Bowl:

“We are very happy to be through because we were expecting a war out there and we were up for the battle. We really want to get to the finals of the Bowl and win it.”

On facing China in the semi finals:

“China played very well against France and France are a very good team. We are ready to battle again although this game will be very difficult and it is very hot here today.”

On playing at the first Women’s RWC Sevens:

“It’s a big honour to be here because we have not been playing Sevens for very long. We had some good games in the European tournaments and we are very happy to be part of this World Cup.”

CHINA 21-5 JAPAN

Coach Zheng Hongjun (CHN)

On progressing to the Bowl semi-finals:

"We are very happy with that win. Most of our players are very young and this is important to our progress and it has gone really well so far. We are confident ahead of the next game in the Bowl and it will also mean more experience for the team."

On the impact the team's performance will have on rugby in China:

"This experience has been great and the chance to have rugby in the Olympics will see a boom in Chinese rugby. This tournament has been really good."

Coach Grant Doorey (JPN)

On the defeat:

"We are disappointed. We would have liked to have got through at least one more round but it has been a good experience for the girls. It's been a difficult couple of days, what with the standard of teams here. I just said to the girls that we have just got to come back better next time around."

On the experience of being at a World Cup:

"I am extremely proud of the girls. Since I started working with them in October they have come a long way and the fact that we are competing is the main thing at the moment. The girls don't get many opportunities and to be here with the men is a fantastic opportunity and the level of competition here is high so that is great for their experience, too."
