Day 1: Pool B

(IRB.COM) Friday 6 March 2009

ENGLAND 47-0 JAPAN

Coach Simon Amor (ENG)

On whether his team can improve in any areas:

"It's a good step up each game. It's been a very tough pool, to be honest; the USA were very strong, a very good physical and fast Russia side, and a dangerous and elusive Japanese side, so I'm very pleased. The girls have performed very well today."

On the challengers ahead:

"I think Canada, USA are very good, as well as Australia, Spain, New Zealand - there are a lot of good teams out there.

"I've been around in Sevens long enough to know that, really, the first day doesn't mean anything. The silverware is won on finals day, which is tomorrow and that's when everyone's performance will step up a level. So there are a lot of dangerous threats out there."

On the importance of the RWC Sevens to the development of the women's game:

"It's huge, it is absolutely huge. Honestly you cannot underestimate just how important it has been in these girls' development. The opportunity and the decision by the IRB to incorporate the Women's Rugby World Cup Sevens into the men's must be commended because it is this goal now that really has given the ambition and the motivation to these players to give all the sacrifice, all the work rate and to step up their level of performances so much over the last 12 months, so it is so important."

RUSSIA 0-12 USA

Coach Julie McCoy (USA)

On her team's performance:

"We finally played some team defence and we finally found our rhythym together as a team. We struggled with that in the first two games."

On her team's readiness for the quarter finals:

"I needed to see that our team defence was working and I think that you saw that today under the pressure. Now that they have found each other (in defence) I think they will take it to the next level.

"We needed this confidence. There has been a lot of parity in the women's game because every team here is nervous because it's their first World Cup. I feel confident that we have shaken the nerves off now. We needed that for our confidence."

JAPAN 0-38 USA

Coach Julie McCoy (USA)

On her team's first win of the tournament:

"I think the girls needed it for their confidence. I think it was good to see them play together even more, so hopefully the third game will be connected better."

On USA scoring six tries:

"It was just concerning that we lost the first game, but the first two go through, so we are going to take the long road."

On facing Russia in their third and final match on Friday:

"We are going to give them a lot of pressure and we are going to create points off turnovers."

ENGLAND 29-0 RUSSIA

Charlotte Barras (ENG)

On the feeling in the camp:

"Really positive. We've got to maintain our concentration and do exactly what we have done in the first two games in the final game tonight against Japan."

On why England controlled the contest with Russia:

"I think we were very composed, we played our structures and we had superior fitness, which showed I think."

On how they will approach their final pool match against Japan:

"We will maintain everything - maintain our composure and continue through to the end of that match."

JAPAN 10-31 RUSSIA

Natalia Selyutina (RUS)

On beating Japan:

"It was a very good win and we are very happy but we have some tough games coming up so our job is not done yet. England are a very tough and strong team and they will be very hard to beat and the USA are also a very tough team to beat."

On scoring three tries:

"I am very happy for myself to score the tries but it is the team that won the game and so I do not take all the praise. The team are very good and we will see how we get on in the next games."

ENGLAND 17-0 USA

Captain Sue Day (ENG)

On the victory:

“We have a huge amount of respect for the USA and we knew it would be a really tough game so we are really pleased with that performance.”

On their next game against Russia:

“We know them from the Euros and we know they are a really tough and physical team with lots of pace out wide so we are expecting another battle.”

Christy Ringgenberg (USA)

On the defeat:

"I am disappointed but in San Diego we came out against them in the same way. The score was very similar, we came out flat, and then in the final we came out as a whole new team with our defence and we got in their face. That was our game plan today but we just didn't execute it. It being our first game we came out a little soft and that is what killed us."

On their next game against Japan:

"Our mindset will be different. We'll have taken the hits already and we'll be a little bit mentally tougher going into the Japan game and we'll have tweaked a few of those things that went wrong with our defence."

Jenn Starkey (USA)

On whether they were affected by the big-match atmosphere at 'The Sevens':

"It's very surreal. It's an indescribable feeling. It's not too much of a (negative) factor for us because unlike a lot of other teams here we have had the opportunity to play in front of large crowds in stadiums before so that's a benefit for us."
