Day 1: Pool C

(IRB.COM) Friday 6 March 2009

CANADA 38-0 BRAZIL

Ashley Patzer (CAN)

On winning their final pool game:

"We didn't have such a good game against Spain so we just knew we had to come out strongly for this game. We did and we really played our hearts out and it feels really good to come out on top and reach our goal coming into the tournament."

On making it to the Cup quarter finals:

"Our big goal was to get to the semi final so we made it a bit harder for ourselves by losing to Spain but we can still do it and that is what we are gunning for."

SPAIN 19-12 THAILAND

Captain Raquel Socias (ESP)

On winning all three of their pool matches:

"It was our objective to win all our games but we were really concentrating on getting that second position. To finish up in top spot is really pleasing for us."

On Spain's chances of winning the tournament:

"We'll take it one step at a time. It looks like we'll play South Africa so we will rest up and prepare ourselves for that one."

On the efforts of Thailand:

"They move the ball very well, they find space and they have some quick runners."

CANADA 0-12 SPAIN

Captain Raquel Socias (ESP)

On the surprise win over Canada:

"We are surprised. We know we played well in our first game, we knew it would be a difficult game and we did not expect anything like this.

"We are vey happy. The first two games we won and now we expect after the last game to be first in the group."

On the loud celebrations after the win:

"Maybe we are happy because, with (victory against) Thailand we have the chance to be the first in the group."

BRAZIL 12-10 THAILAND

Emily Barker (BRA)

On clinching victory at the finish:

"It was a great turnover right at the end and I think that we did very well in our second match of the day."

On their Sevens experience so far:

"I think that we are looking to start off in the World Cup in a positive way, be it losing or winning. It is all part of the experience but I think we are into something good here."

On which teams have impressed her so far:

"We're very impressed with the English girls. They are very strong. We're also very impressed with the Australian girls. We don't know very much about them but we think they're very strong and they've got a good game there."

BRAZIL 0-19 SPAIN

Captain Raquel Socias (ESP)

On the victory:

"We feel very good because it's very important to start with a win and now our objective is to pass to the second round. We know Canada will be different to this game but we will try and get two wins today."

On whether there will be any changes for the next match against Canada:

"I don't know, this is how we play, but maybe our coach will feel that we have to change something."

On being at RWC Sevens 2009:

"We feel it is the most important tournament that we can play. It's very beautiful this place. We are very happy to be here and we want to make good rugby."

CANADA 52-7 THAILAND

Mandy Marchak (CAN)

On her team's first match at the tournament:

"Amazing. Everything we worked for came out. It was awesome."

On what worked well for them:

"Just keeping strong, just keeping our support lines - that seemed to be what worked for us today."

Captain Maria Gallo (CAN)

On her team's performance:

"It was amazing. It was totally what we wanted to do and show the fans what we can do. We think we got lucky with the draw in the pool, so we want to come out strong and obviously make it to the quarter finals and proceed from there."

On the difference between the teams:

"I think we had a lot of support and definitely our physical side. We are quite a lot larger and stronger than the Thailand women. So we use that up the middle of the field and that resulted in a lot of tries up the gut."

On how the team will manage their day:

"We have got our day drawn out minute by minute, so we are watched closely by the staff and we are going to take the shade whenever we can. Stay out of the sun and just focus one game at a time."

On the squad rotation in the tournament:

"We are probably going to get some fresh legs on there - try to make sure we get everybody to play in the pool rounds and then start focusing more on the rounds to come. I am sure our coach is going to use as many legs that she can."
