Day 1: Pool D

(IRB.COM) Friday 6 March 2009

NEW ZEALAND 25-0 SOUTH AFRICA

Coach Darryl Suasua (NZL)

On the key to their defence:

"Tackling really. It sounds silly but it's one of the biggest problems we have had in our training. Our defensive pattern has been OK but we haven't been making the tackles."

On any areas for improvement:

"There's always room for improvement, in particular our ruck work. Just working our ball off the deck is not quick enough so there's a few things there."

On their chances in the Cup quarter finals:

"We'll have to wait and see. We haven't had a lot of Sevens back home. I think throughout the tournament one of the key things for us was to get better with each game.

"We played the (United) States in a warm up. It was the first time the girls played together so they seem to be improving with each game."

ITALY 12-7 UGANDA

Helen Buteme (UGA)

On the experience gained at RWC Sevens 2009:

"It was pretty much a baptism of fire. It's a good learing experience. We had a very tough game against New Zealand. Against South Africa we started off well, doing all the right things, but made a couple of silly mistakes that they capitalised on and scored. Against Italy we should have done a lot better than that but we'll move on to the next stage and see what happens."

SOUTH AFRICA 26-0 UGANDA

Coach Denver Wannies (RSA)

On the performance against Uganda:

"We are happy to be able to pull it off. I think the girls have been looking forward to this. They wanted to make sure they qualify for at least the knockout stages of the tournament. I think this (takes us) very close to it, depending on the outcome of the next game, but we're very pleased with how it has been going up until now."

On the pool-topping decider against New Zealand:

"We are looking forward to it. We have never played them before. This is history in the making as far as our team is concerned, so we are looking forward to that. They have been doing well up until now but the girls are looking forward to it."

NEW ZEALAND 45-0 ITALY

Linda Itunu (NZL)

On scoring a first-half hat-trick:

"It feels great but it is pretty much an effort by the team so it wasn't all me or anything."

On not conceding any points again:

"We are quite arogant on defence, we don't want anyone to cross the line, plus we have a 'body on the line' policy in the team."

On the potentially more competitive match against South Africa later on Friday:

"We know South Africa have a lot in them so we are not going to take them lightly."

SOUTH AFRICA 17-ITALY 5

Tash Hofmeester (RSA)

On her team's winning start:

"It was a really good start and it will help us for the tournament (going forward). We were just trying to get some points on the board there."

On whether she was happy with her team's performance:

"I am but I think we can do a little bit better than what we performed out here. There is a lot of potential in our girls so we can do better."

On scoring twice:

"It's a good start for me and I am just going to build on that."

NEW ZEALAND 50-0 UGANDA

Captain Hannah Porter (NZL)

On the victory:

"It was good to get it out of the way. We haven't had a tournament since the qualifying tournament about six months ago so it was good to get a game under the belt. It has been a long time coming so just to get those nerves out of the way is a bit of a relief really."

On improvements needed before the Italy match:

"I think we all had a go. I think we can all use our patterns a bit more. After finally getting out there, everybody wanted to show what they had. So (we will aim) to get back to some patterns and work through our structures a bit more in the Italy game."
