Day 2: Pool C

(IRB.COM) Friday 6 March 2009

SOUTH AFRICA 19-14 SCOTLAND

Captain Mpho Mbiyozo (RSA)

On whether they are playing at the standard required for the quarter finals:

"You never know, in a World Cup anything can happen. We just have to go out there and stick to what we do best."

On meeting Argentina in the quarter finals:

"They are a phenomenal side and just came off a win in San Diego. We have to pick up our game and play better than we did today."

CANADA 22-12 JAPAN

Coach Shane Thompson (CAN)

On his team's performance:

"The guys I think were pretty pleased with the win. But I can see in their eyes they wanted to put a few more points on (the board) and have a crack at the top eight, with that seventh and eighth spot.

"I don't think we did enough with the points but you never know. Scotland could do something against South Africa. But I was saying to the guys we need to control what we can control. We had an opportunity against South Africa where we threw two forward passes that could have been two tries."

On Japan's effort:

"Japan played well. They only had an hour or so between games so I give credit to them."

On what his team has learned:

"We improve from tour to tour, the same as anybody. We don't have enough time together for training, and we get better as tours are progressing, as with New Zealand and San Diego a couple of weeks ago, then preparations in between that. This tour I can see the guys getting more confident and that is why a win like this is important as it is going to build confidence into tomorrow. We need to play at a level we are not used to."

SCOTLAND 31-10 JAPAN

Coach Stephen Gemmell (SCO)

On the victory, coming after Thursday's defeat by Canada:

"That's more like the Scotland team I know we have got. I am still disappointed with the try we conceded at the end with a minute to go. They are the things that cost you at a World Cup when points matter."

On the next match against South Africa:

"We know we have to beat them and that will be difficult but that will be easier off the back of a win."

Colin Gregor (SCO)

On his tries:

"You have to notice when there is not a sweeper at the lineout and I did and just saw a lot of space behind them. I got a lucky bounce and I managed to fall over the line."

On the improvements they made after Thursday's defeat by Canada:

"Our attitude. To be honest, yesterday was a little bit baffling as we didn't front up and a lot of us looked like lost little boys, so today we knew we had to come out. You don't get to play at a World Cup very often, if ever, so we knew we had to improve and be switched on from the start."

SOUTH AFRICA 15-7 CANADA

Coach Paul Treu (RSA)

On the victory against Canada:

"It is a World Cup, so there will be no easy games. You see Canada beating Scotland yesterday - at half time the score was 33-0 and they are not a bad side. They came out here and gave us a really hard time and they could have clinched the game if it wasn't for that forward pass.

"But credit to my players as well for keeping their composure. It was a much better performance than last night. There are still a few mistakes but I will take any points in the World Cup."

On the atmosphere:

"It is amazing. We have a lot of support from South Africans who have come to support the team and we are hoping we can give something back to them and they will continue supporting us through the tournament."

On the next match against Scotland:

"We have to win it because we are not going to qualify on points difference. It will be difficult playing on pitch two. We saw England battling, with a close score against Tunisia, and we will just have to 'up' ourselves mentally and that is going to be a must-win for us."
